Building experience in a new field

Transitioning to a new career field doesn’t have to be impossible.

Here are 5 steps you can take:

  1. Establish a foundation of skills.

Begin by acquiring fundamental knowledge in your desired field. Identify reputable introductory courses related to the target industry on sites such as Coursera or EdX and complete them to build a strong knowledge base.

While education is valuable, focus on achieving tangible results (hands-on experience), as this is vital in the hiring process.

  1. Test your new knowledge.

Create a portfolio to showcase and practice your work and projects. Design an objective or problem to solve based around the type of work you’d actually be doing if you were hired in your new field.

Even conducting small-scale work will enable you to put what you’ve learned to the test. Practical experience with real tools is crucial during this phase.

  1. Volunteer!

Reach out to local businesses to express the intention of transitioning industries. Offer services pro bono, with the flexibility for either party to terminate the arrangement at any time. This volunteering opportunity will provide authentic experience and generate credible testimonials.

  1. Transition to a consulting role.

Once you’ve gained experience through volunteer work, start offering services at reasonable rates.

Utilize the case studies from volunteering engagements to attract paying clients. As your experience grows, progressively increase your rates and expand your skill set to continue learning while earning.

  1. Package your new experience.

Craft a unique and compelling professional profile by highlighting your new experience on your resume, cover letter and LinkedIn profile.

Offer tangible examples to prospective employers during interviews and showcase the results that you’ve achieved.

If you’re hoping to make the jump to a new career, follow these steps to pave the way for a proactive and strategic approach!
