Your competition for jobs isn't doing this, I bet
One thing to give you an edge
What is a value proposition?
In marketing terms, a value proposition is an innovation, service, or feature intended to make a company or product attractive to customers.
Essentially: “You should pick our product because ________.”
This needs to be a strong statement, or else customers won’t be convinced to buy the product.
As you know, there are many parallels between sales and a job search.
As a candidate, you need to “sell” yourself as the best fit for the role to persuade a company to hire you over anyone else.
That means you need to have a strong value proposition to make it easy for the company to understand why and how you can provide them value if hired.
Most people wrongly believe that a resume is enough to demonstrate this point.
When you’re applying for a role with 100+ other people, many of the resumes will look alike in terms of experience and skill set. It’s difficult to stand out with a resume alone.
Moreover, a resume typically focuses on what you’ve accomplished for your past companies, not what you could do for your next company.
And there, my friend, lies the key.
Your value proposition during the job search should be a creative way to showcase exactly what you would aim to accomplish if hired for the specific role you want.
This can be pulled together in a presentation format (such as a PowerPoint), a written document, or other creative visual to showcase your plan for the role and the company.

Here is a part of a slide deck one of my client’s put together to demonstrate some important steps she would help determine and implement to strengthen the company’s HR function, culture and employee development.

This is part of a strategic plan drawn up by one of my clients to show exactly what she would do if hired for the role to help the university improve their Bar Exam prep for law students.
If you want an edge over the other applicants for a role or even over potential finalists that a company might be considering over you, use a value proposition to solidify their choice in you.
Think about the role itself and the challenges the company is facing. How can you solve those challenges? What unique ideas do you have? What strategy would you role out if you were to be hired?
If you can show the company that you already have the answers, how can they possibly pick anyone else?
This strategy is especially useful if you find yourself in interviews for roles where you may not be the candidate with the most experience.
Using a value proposition is a way you can overcome that perceived lack of experience and demonstrate that you are ready to drive better results than anyone else they may be considering.
In short, the process is simple:
1) Identify what problems they need solved or objectives they need completed from the role you want.
2) Develop a plan to solve those problems or meet those objectives.
3) Share your plan with those on the hiring team.
If you’re willing to invest a little extra effort to draw up your value proposition in a creative way, you’ll have the power to rocket past your competition and position yourself as the ideal candidate for more roles that you want.
