Confidence in a career change
If you’re reading this email, it’s probably because you’re in the middle of a career transition or you want to make one.
Based on the hundreds of job seekers I’ve worked with the past few years, I know that often times, the biggest obstacle in a job search is doubt.
My message to you:
You can do this.
Last week I met Giovanni Torres, who runs The Compounding Career newsletter.
Gio has always been drawn to the startup world, and he has worked for three of them at this point, all in different sectors.
We talked about how it’s possible to land a great job offer when you don’t necessarily have experience in that product or industry.
He gave some great perspective on this:
You will never feel 100% confident getting a role in a new industry. Imposter syndrome is going to come knocking at your door anytime you feel like you made a step forward in the right direction. What it comes down to is your "Why" and using that as motivation. Do you want to be stuck in the same situation forever? Or do you want to live a life where you are excited about the role, industry, and career journey you are in?
So how do you actually make it happen?
How can someone successfully jump from one industry to another?
The one thing that has helped me transition to a new role, with little experience, is my willingness to take action. I don't have the best skills or background to stand out in a crowded room. But what I do have is an innate ability to show up every day and put in the work when no one else wants to. Take this same approach to your job search and those rejections will start to feel a lot easier. If you want something so bad in your life that you are willing to overcome your fears then you will be better than 99% of the applicant pool.
The message here is to do things that others aren’t willing to do.
Ask yourself… have I actually been networking as much as I should be?
Have I gone the extra mile on my resume or had a professional look at it to make sure it helps me stand out?
If you’re sick of the lack of success your job search has gotten so far, you can’t continue to do the same thing over and over again without results.
Something has to change.
“How should people know when is the right time to make a change in their careers?” I asked Gio.
“It's time to make a change when you wake up every day and dread the work day. Your spark is gone and you need to change jobs to get it back.”
So, my challenge today for you:
Make a change. Take action. Do something about your career or your job search to put you on the path to getting hired.
Signing up for my newsletter was a great first step, but it will take more than that.
If you want to chat with me more about your situation and see how I can help, let’s talk.
